How To Keep Your House Warm Without Breaking The Bank

Posted on

There are many people who wonder what they can do to keep their houses warm in the winter without overspending on their HVAC and energy bill. It can be very hard to keep the house comfortable without feeling like you need to crank the heat. Here are some simple things that you should check in your house to make sure that you are no wasting money.

1. Check Your Windows

One of the most common place for heat to leave the house is through the windows. The windows offer great insulation in many instances. This means that if the window is sealed properly and if it is protecting the house you could be saving hundreds of dollars in the winter. Conversely, if the windows are old and if they are not holding in the heat like they should, then you have problems and are overspending.

It can be hard to know if your windows are problematic. One thing you should be doing often it touching the window. The window should more closely reflect the temperature of the inside of the house, not the outside. This means that in the winter if the window is extremely cold to the touch, it is not insulating the house properly. Second, you shouldn't see any kind of debris in the middle of the double pane windows. If the window is sealed right, nothing should be able to get inside the window. So if there are bugs, or dirt in the middle, then you have a problem.

If you determine that your windows aren't sealing properly, consider having them replaced. Even though it may cost a little more upfront, it will save you lots of money over the years. If you can't yet afford to change the windows, cover the windows with a type of plastic wrap that will help to seal in the heat.

2. Put Down Rugs

Another great thing to do in the winter is insulate the inside of your home and make it less drafty. In the summer you want the house to have a lot of airflow in the house, this helps to cool it down. But in the winter it is the very last thing you want. The more draft you have the colder it will get. So putting down rugs, hanging pictures on the walls, and having the house insulated with carpets and items will keep the house warmer.

These are just a few things you can do to keep your house warm without spending a ton of money.  Contact an HVAC company, like Heatcraft Heating & Cooling, for more help.
